Byzantium plays a vital role for the transmission of ancient, late antique and Medieval Greek texts. Thousands of manuscripts preserved in libraries and collections are full of texts of ancient tragedians, late antique church fathers and particularly of Biblical texts, which represent the lion’s share of transmitted manuscripts. A considerable number of manuscripts, depending on the setting in which they were copied, are equipped with illuminations or various kinds of ornamentation which increase their value. These often very elaborately and colorfully designed depictions are usually accompanied by texts, which, due to not belonging to the main text of the manuscript, are called paratexts. A considerable number of these paratexts are in verse form. Such texts, called book epigrams, fulfill various functions: they explain the depicted scenes, highlight the relationship between the manuscript’s main text and the illumination, or act themselves as images, as for example when the text of the epigram is written in the shape of a cross or inscribed into an ornamental frame. Many of these texts, considered purely on visual grounds, already resemble inscriptions which are preserved on other kinds of surfaces and objects. The current volume is structured like the preceding three volumes of the series Byzantine epigrams on objects, which have so far presented inscriptional verses on frescoes and mosaics; icons and portable objects; and on stones. The publication’s focus is on critical editions of the texts, (German) translations of the Greek texts, and commentaries. Besides general chapters on the cultural-historical phenomenon of quasi-inscriptional verses in manuscripts, paleography, language etc., almost all the epigrams treated are also depicted in the volume’s collection of plates in order to facilitate study of the original context of the verses.

Byzantine poetry of the eleventh century is fascinating, yet underexplored terrain. It presents a lively view on contemporary society, is often permeated with wit and elegance, and is concerned with a wide variety of subjects. Only now are we beginning to perceive the possibilities that this poetry offers for our knowledge of Byzantine culture in general, for the intellectual history of Byzantium, and for the evolution of poetry itself. It is, moreover, sometimes in the most neglected texts that the most fascinating discoveries can be made. This book, the first collaborative book-length study on the topic, takes an important step to fill this gap. It brings together specialists of the period who delve into this poetry with different but complementary objectives in mind, covering the links between art and text, linguistic evolutions, social functionality, contemporary reading attitudes, and the like. The authors aim to give the production of 11th-century verse a place in the Byzantine genre system and in the historic evolution of Byzantine poetry and metrics. As a result, this book will, to use the expression of two important poets of the period, "offer a small taste" of what can be gained from the serious study of this period.

Bd.1: "Epigramme spielen innerhalb des literarischen Schaffens der Byzantiner eine wichtige Rolle. In nicht geringer Anzahl (mehr als 1000 Stück) sind diese auch heute noch inschriftlich erhalten, sei es auf Fresken, Mosaiken, Ikonen, auf so genannten Objekten der Kleinkunst und in Handschriften, in denen sie als Rahmen von Miniaturen fungieren oder Figurengedichte bilden. Der vorliegende erste Band der Reihe Byzantinische Epigramme in inschriftlicher Überlieferung widmet sich Epigrammen auf Fresken und Mosaiken. Aus dem Untersuchungszeitraum (600 n. Chr.–1500 n. Chr.) sind mehr als 250 Epigramme auf Fresken und knapp 20 Epigramme auf Mosaiken überliefert. In einer ausführlichen Einleitung wird auf Fragen der Definition, der Geschichte und der äußeren Gestaltung byzantinischer Epigramme ebenso wie auf die Besonderheiten byzantinischer Epigramme auf Fresken und Mosaiken eingegangen. Im Hauptteil der Arbeit folgen die kritische Edition der Epigramme, deren deutsche Übersetzung und ein philologisch-sprachlicher sowie historisch-realienkundlicher Kommentar. Bd.1: Indices zu Epigrammanfängen, griechischen Wörtern, biblischen, antiken und byzantinischen Stellen und ein allgemeiner Index zu Orten und Personen runden den Band ab. Zur optischen Veranschaulichung sind fast alle behandelten Epigramme auch bildlich in einem Tafelteil dokumentiert. Viele der byzantinischen Epigramme, die mitunter von beträchtlicher Länge sein können, sind tatsächlich auch noch in situ erhalten. Der zweite Band der Reihe „Byzantinische Epigramme in inschriftlicher Überlieferung“ ist byzantinischen Epigrammen auf Ikonen und Objekten der Kleinkunst gewidmet. Aus dem Untersuchungszeitraum (600 n. Chr. – 1500 n. Chr.) sind 67 Ikonen, 115 Metallobjekte, 34 Elfenbeine, 9 aus Holz gefertigte Objekte, 4 Steatitobjekte und 11 Textilien überliefert bzw. bekannt, die Verse als Inschriften tragen. Der vorliegende Band umfasst auch Addenda zu Band 1 (Byzantinische Epigramme auf Fresken und Mosaiken), insgesamt 33 Nummern. In der Einleitung wird auf die Spezifika der auf den erwähnten Objekten überlieferten Epigramme hingewiesen. Daneben wird auch auf Autoren, Metrik und Prosodie, Sprache, die Interaktion von Wort, Bild und Betrachter und paläographische Fragen eingegangen. Der Hauptteil der Arbeit ist der kritischen Edition der Epigramme, deren deutscher Übersetzung und dem philologisch-sprachlichen sowie historisch-realienkundlichen Kommentar der einzelnen Stücke gewidmet. Bd.3: Der Hauptteil der Arbeit ist der kritischen Edition der mehr als 300 Epigramme, deren deutscher Übersetzung und dem philologisch-sprachlichen sowie historisch-realienkundlichen Kommentar gewidmet; auch auf paläographische Fragen hinsichtlich der zeitlichen Einordnung der Epigramme wird eingegangen. Zur Veranschaulichung sind fast alle behandelten Epigramme auch bildlich in einem Tafelteil (in Farbe und Schwarzweiß) dokumentiert. This book explores the nexus of art, personal piety, and self-representation in the last centuries of Byzantium. Spanning the period from around 1100 to around 1450, it focuses upon the evidence of verse inscriptions, or epigrams, on works of art. Epigrammatic poetry, Professor Drpić argues, constitutes a critical - if largely neglected - source for reconstructing aesthetic and socio-cultural discourses that informed the making, use, and perception of art in the Byzantine world. Bringing together art-historical and literary modes of analysis, the book examines epigrams and other related texts alongside an array of objects, including icons, reliquaries, ecclesiastical textiles, mosaics, and entire church buildings. By attending to such diverse topics as devotional self-fashioning, the aesthetics of adornment, sacred giving, and the erotics of the icon, this study offers a penetrating and highly original account of Byzantine art and its place in Byzantine society and religious life.
